“Do-It-Yourself” Sports Recruiting

It used to be that athletes at the high school level simply played their sports, went to class, hung out with friends…oh yeah, chased girls (or in some cases, ran from girls….) and in general, had the typical teenage life going on.  If you were really good in your sport (or sports), it would bring you attention from a college or two and if you were lucky, they would make you an offer to pay for your college in exchange for you playing for their team, etc.  It happened from time to time and was a great opportunity for someone to get into college……….

Who’s Scholarship Is It Anyway?

In the whole dynamic of college athletic scholarships and recruiting, there seems to be a “blurred” view of what the end result should be…………Depending on what your role is in the process, that end result could be quite diverse.  If you’re the athlete, you would think it is getting to play your sport at that next higher level!  For other athletes, it might be the “stepping-stone” into the pros!  A parent, seeing your child go to college…..FREE!  A high school coach, getting a good reputation in placing talent within the collegiate system!  The college coach, obviously, getting the talent to win the elusive championship!

Summer Sports and Combines

It seems that there are thousands of organizations out there to help make a high school athlete better and give them plenty of exposure during the summer…….The problem is, there is a hefty price tag that comes with it.  Make no mistake, the services that sponsor combines hold these events as money-makers!  Your summer “club” organizations charge fees to be part of the program, but that is mostly to cover the expense of the facilities, uniforms, the traveling associated with the team, etc.

High Grades = More Opportunities

I was talking to a “college-age” athlete the other day at the gym who was doing some Box Drills.  He said he was working hard for a tryout with a semi-pro football team……hoping eventually to “go pro”, etc.  When I asked him where he played his college ball, he shrugged and said “he didn’t play college”.  After a little discussion, I found out that his grades were too poor to get into a 4 yr college program and he didn’t have the means to try and walk-on at any JUCO, so he is just taking a few community school courses and trying to skip the college phase……….

Expand Your Student-Athlete’s Scholarship Options…

As you can imagine, I get to talk with a lot of high school athletes’ parents while I am attending events around the nation.  One of the main topics discussed is “where” their student-athletes are considering going to college.  The overwhelming response I get from the parents is “somewhere close by” or “as long as they’re somewhere in our state”……

A Scholarship Is A Privilege…

As you can imagine, in our quest to help the high school student-athlete wade through the college recruiting process, we come across quite a few “personalities”…  Of course, I’m referring to the attitude and demeanor of the athletes themselves (and some parents).

No Sports in High School?

Recently, the State of Florida tabled a proposal to Duval county to remove “all” athletics from its 20 public schools, as a way to cut the budget deficit…..As you can imagine the feces “hit the fan”!  Think about it, 20 public schools in one single county doing away with every sport, including cheerleading and band!  The mere mention of such a proposal should have caused every citizen to re-think the votes they cast in the last state and local elections!  It appears that the individuals holding the political power (for now) have either never played a single sport in their lives or they have simply forgotten their experiences, perhaps covered by the money they’re making!

Recruiting Highlight Videos – A MUST HAVE!

A “Must Have”, but certainly not a “Must Spend”……

We get a lot of calls and e-mails at the ViewMySport.com offices from athletes and parents wanting to know if we do video taping for recruits or if we know of anyone we could refer them to……First of all, “no”, ViewMySport.com does not provide video services.  There are a lot of video services out there and a lot of individuals that can do it for you “on the side”.  Do a search for your area via Google or use the Yellow Pages.

Top 5 Tips To Increase Basketball Scholarship Offers

1.) Playing for an AAU Team That Travels Nationally
Here is what Tennessee head basketball coach Bruce Pearl said recently about the basketball recruiting process: “If you’re in the AAU program and you’ve got a decent team, then the summertime is when you’ve got a chance go make a name for yourself. You can’t hunt bear in the lodge, so kids have got to go out there at these tournaments and give us a chance to evaluate them.”  Playing on an AAU team that travels the country in tournaments is the #1 factor in getting a Division I basketball offer.  I have seen numerous kids get scholarships simply because they played on a good AAU team.  They had to play well at the right times but this certainly beats sitting at home working out with your teammates.  With basketball, I cannot stress the importance of getting on the AAU circuit.

Baseball Scholarship Breakdown

How Many Schools:      There are 297 schools playing Division I baseball, including perennial powers like LSU, Miami (Fla.), Wichita State, Texas and Arizona State.

Scholarship Count:      Baseball programs have only 11.7 scholarships to work with, meaning full rides are rare considering roster size. Scholarships can be split up and given to up to 30 players.

Scholarship Breakdown:      Division I baseball recruiting is tricky. A lot of scholarship money is promised to players who end up turning it down in the 11th hour for a professional contract. Keep that in mind to gain an understanding of why a coach may call late.
