Biography

My name is Drew Zink, and I am a sophomore at Lincoln Charter School (1A) in Denver, North Carolina-- the Class of 2020. I currently run cross country and track, and as a freshman I was the only male athlete at my school to compete in state championships in three sports last year. I also practice with the soccer team for cross training to work muscles I normally wouldn't use in running.

This was my first year participating in organized running, and some of my accomplishments for cross country include a top-five finish at Regionals, as well as making the All-Conference and All-Region teams. In indoor track, I qualified for State in the 3200, finishing 11th overall. In outdoor track, I finished 7th in the 3200 and 8th in the 1600 at the state meet. I also was named a member of the All-Lake Track and Field team, which included athletes from all classifications.

So far, I have taken all honors classes in my high school career. I currently hold a 4.0 unweighted GPA and will be taking Senior level Pre-Calculus this year. I am also active in my school's Environmental Club and Fellowship of Christian Athletes program.

I am very active in my community through my Boy Scout Troop in Sherrills Ford, NC and my chapter of the Order of the Arrow in Newton, NC. I have helped build park benches, assemble permanent tents, and clean entire camps with these programs. I have assisted many scouts working on their Eagle Scout projects, and I will begin work on my Eagle Scout project this fall.

3rd Place at States!
November 6, 2017
This weekend was really magical for my team and I as I was able to get on the podium with both my team and as an individual. I finished 3rd place to a senior and a junior with a time of 16:44 on a tough course with rough conditions. Our team finished 2nd by 8 points over a strong Franklin Academy squad, and I was really excited to get them up there. I am pumped to run at Foot Locker South in a couple of weeks and can't wait for my Indoor season to start!!! Gearing up for States!
October 30, 2017
This past weekend, my team ran at the 1A west regional. I finished 1st, running a 16:45 while my team won the meet. I am excited for state, which is coming up next weekend at Ivey Redmond Park in Kernersville! Hoping to run up front and challenge for the state title both as an individual and as a team.
Finally Broke 17!
September 24, 2017
On September 23rd our team geared up to run against top talent in the state at the Hare and Hounds Invitational at McAlpine Park in Charlotte, North Carolina. We were set to run in the Invitational Division, which contained mostly small schools but also some major 3A powerhouses. We were also missing our #2 runner due to a college visit, so we wanted to show that we could perform with adversity. I wanted to break the 17-minute barrier in this race, but I knew I would have to do something different than work my way up from the middle of the pack as I normally would. When the race started, I sprinted out to join the front pack and tried to stay with them. I was in a good position in 4th when I reached the big hill on the course so I decided to try and stay close to the front-runners. In the end I finished 3rd overall with a time of 16:39. My team ended up finishing 6th overall, topping all of the 1A schools in the division, including #2 ranked Community School of Davidson. Next week we will travel to Asheville Christian Academy in Swannanoa, North Carolina for a preview of the 1A West regional in the Ramble by the River on September 30th.
Strong run at Friday Night Lights
September 11, 2017
On September 8th our team got back on the course at Ivey M. Redmond Park in Kernersville, NC. We ran in the Invitational division and wanted to surprise some people this race. I was feeling good going into the race but got boxed in in the start of the race trying to blend with the pack due to an outside starting lane. I slowly made up ground and had moved up to 8th by the time I had reached the 2 mile mark. I ended up finishing in 9th place, running a time of 17:00. Our number 2 runner came in 17:50 and our 3-5 runners all finished in the 18:10-18:20 range. This was good enough for us to finish 2nd in the team division behind 3A powerhouse Marvin Ridge. We have our next meet on our home course in Denver, North Carolina, September 14 when we host the Southern Piedmont Pre-Conference meet .
New PR and School Record Set at Providence Invitational!
August 28, 2017
August 26th was a big day for me and my team as we started the regular season in the Providence Invitational at McAlpine Park in Charlotte, NC. We raced in the open division and took on some of the top 1A schools in the state in Community School of Davidson and Bishop McGuinness. I went out with at 5:25 first mile and only fell off a little bit as I finished 6th overall in my division with a time of 17:01! The time was a new PR for me by 30 seconds and took down the old school record of 17:19. Our team was very strong as well, as our top 5 guys all finished under 19 minutes, which is strong for 1A schools. The team finished 5th in our division, outplacing Bishop and CSD in the final results. Disappointed that we have an off weekend coming up, but we will resume our season under the lights at Ivey Redmond Park in Kernersville, NC on September 8th.
First Meet of the Season Complete!
August 19, 2017
My xc season started today! My team ran in a fun 2 mile race today with lots of hills today at Myers Park HS in Charlotte, NC! I was put in the Frosh/Soph Race and finished 4th with a time of 11:54. I'm so excited to run next week at McAlpine Park in the Providence Invitational race.
